Age influence on quality of shell and penetration in bacterial laying lightweight eggs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Smaniotto,B.D.; Amarante,A.F.; Altarugio,R.; Silva,I.G.O.; Corrêa,I.M.O.; Pereira,L.Q.; Sartori,M.M.P.; Andreatti Filho,R.L.; Guimarães-Okamoto,P.T.C.; Okamoto,A.S..
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the influence of the bird’s age on the quality of the shell and percentage of bacterial penetration in commercial eggs. White-shelled commercial eggs were used, laid by light laying hens in their first laying cycle at 21, 39, 51, and 62 weeks of age. Shell quality evaluations comprised: egg weight, specific gravity, percentage and thickness of shell, number and size of pores. For evaluations regarding bacterial penetration, strains of several enterobacterias and one salmonella were used, all of which resistant to Nalidixic acid (100µg/ml). The method employed for evaluation of bacterial penetration was filling the eggs with growth medium. The data were subjected to variance analysis with 5% of probability using SAS (Education...

Autologous transplant: microbial contamination of hematopoietic stem cell products BJID
Almeida,Igor Dullius; Schmalfuss,Tissiana; Röhsig,Liane Marise; Goldani,Luciano Zubaran.
Hematopoietic progenitor cells from peripheral blood (HPCPB) are commonly used for autologous and allogenic transplants in patients with most various onco-hematological diseases, and despite the utilization of sterile techniques during collection and processing of these products, bacterial contamination can occur. This study aimed to investigate the microbial contamination of HPCPB products. Microbial cultures of 837 HPCPB products between the year 2000 and 2009 were retrospectively analyzed to determine the incidence of culture positivity and identify the main organisms that cause contamination. The microbiological studies were performed with an automated system (BacT/Alert® bioMérieux Corporate). Thirty-six (4.3%) of 837 microbial cultures were...

Biofilm formation by Vibrio parahaemolyticus on different surfaces and its resistance to sodium hypochlorite Ciência Rural
Rosa,Janaina Viana da; Conceição,Natália Volpato da; Conceição,Rita de Cássia dos Santos da; Timm,Cláudio Dias.
ABSTRACT: Vibrio parahaemolyticus is an important pathogen for both fish industry and consumers. It forms biofilm which makes it difficult to eliminate this microorganism using sanitizers. This study aimed to assess biofilm formation on different surfaces and effect of biofilm on resistance to sanitizers. Eight isolates of biofilm-forming V. parahaemolyticus were tested for the ability to form biofilms on a number of surfaces including high density polyethylene, stainless steel, glass, exoskeleton of Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Pink Shrimp), and operculum of Micropogonias furnieri (Whitemouth Croaker). Efficiency of sanitizer sodium hypochlorite against the bacteria was evaluated in the biofilms formed on the surface of the materials used; out the eight...

CALLIPHORIDAE (DIPTERA) IN MANAUS: IV. BACTERIA ISOLATED FROM BLOWFLIES COLLECTED IN STREET MARKETS Acta Amazonica
PARALUPPI,Norival D; VASCONCELOS,Jurandir C. de; AQUINO,Josenilda S. de; CASTELLÓN,Eloy G; SILVA,Maria do S. B. da.
Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Proteussp., Providenciasp., Citrobactersp. and Klebsiellasp. were isolated from calliphorid flies collected in eight street markets in the city of Manaus, Amazonas State, Brazil. The presence of £. coliin the samples suggests that faecal contamination is occurring and that these flies are potential vehicles of enteropathogenic bacteria to exposed foods.

Inhibición de los contaminantes del tempeh de soya OceanDocs
Mejías, E.; Delgado, R.; Silveira, I.; Lafargue, D.; Cárdenas, E..

Holbach, Marine.
In many countries, aquaculture of pectinids depends on the success of artificial spat production in hatchery. This production is always unpredictable due to the variability of hatching rate and larval survival. Flow-through larval rearing systems were developed in Norway for the King scallop Pecten maximus and showed promising results. Unfortunately the system needs to be optimized since the larval yields and the densities used are still relatively low. In France, a small-scale (5 L) and high-density (≤ 300 larva mL-1) flow-through larval rearing system was successfully developed for oysters. First trials in such system and in similar conditions with P. maximus failed as we registered slower growth and high mortality rate in only a few days. It is known...

Physical and chemical quality of sanitized commercial eggs experimentally contaminated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and refrigerated during storage R. Bras. Zootec.
Mendes,Fernanda Rodrigues; Andrade,Maria Auxiliadora; Café,Marcos Barcellos; Santos,Januária Silva; Lacerda,Maria Juliana Ribeiro; Stringhini,José Henrique; Stringhini,Maria Luiza; Leandro,Nadja Susana Mogyca.
The objective of this study to verify the physicochemical quality of commercial washed and unwashed eggs, experimentally inoculated on the shell with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and stored at 5 and 25 ºC for 30 days. A total of 384 eggs, classified as large, from light Dekalb White laying hens at 30 to 40 weeks of age, were used. The experimental design consisted of two blocks in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (contamination, washing, and refrigeration) with six replicates. The sanitization was performed by mechanical washing (hot water with chlorhexidine 20% and 8% active content). Eggs were contaminated by handling with 1.5 × 10(5) colony-forming units (cfu) of Pseudomonas aeruginosa/mL solution, and stored at 5 and 25 ºC for 30 days. Each ten days,...

Qualidade do leite cru em sistema de ordenha tradicional no estado do Acre. Infoteca-e
